Blue Diamond Camp – A Green Tourism Model Towards Net Zero Goal

Blue Diamond Camp is a 5-hectare camping retreat nestled in Xuan Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. Located within the breathtaking Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, the camp offers an array of nature exploration activities. It is fully equipped and conveniently situated away from residential areas.

Blue Diamond Camp provides visitors with a camping experience in Quang Binh, a serene location with breathtaking natural scenery. Additionally, it operates under a tourism business model that aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions. The concept of net zero involves reducing emissions to the lowest feasible level and compensating for the remaining emissions by implementing measures to absorb and remove them from the atmosphere. This goal is crucial in addressing climate change and preserving the environment.

Blue Diamond Camp has implemented several measures to achieve its Net Zero goal, including:

    • Utilizing renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, to power its offices, campsites, and transportation. Solar panels are installed on the roofs and vehicles of Blue Diamond Camp, providing clean and green electricity for lighting, cooling, transportation vehicles (such as the E-Rice Ship cruise), electric passenger cars, and charging devices. These energy sources help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.

    • To reduce waste generation and implement appropriate waste management measures, Blue Diamond Camp employs methods such as composting, recycling, and reuse. Following the “reduce, reuse, recycle” principle, the camp aims to minimize waste production and treatment. For instance, the swimming pool is designed underground to block out light and prevent algae growth, and a sediment filter is used to purify the pool water. Food planning and calculation are also done to minimize food waste. Composting involves converting organic waste into nutrient-rich soil for gardening and farming purposes. Recycling transforms waste materials into new products that can be reused, while reuse involves using products multiple times or for different purposes. These measures effectively reduce the environmental impact of waste and contribute to the conservation of natural resources.

    • In order to minimize deforestation and the use of concrete in construction, Blue Diamond builds modular infrastructure. The walkways in the area are designed as suspension bridges to reduce environmental impact. Blue Diamond Camp takes steps to compensate for greenhouse gas emissions by planting trees, supporting forest restoration projects, and donating to environmental organizations. We calculate the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced by our activities. To offset these emissions, we plant trees in the areas where we operate. These trees help absorb carbon dioxide from the air, provide oxygen, create shade, and serve as habitats for wildlife. Additionally, we support forest replanting projects in other parts of Quang Binh, contributing to forest restoration and biodiversity. Blue Diamond Camp also makes donations to environmental organizations involved in climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives.

      • Blue Diamond Camp focuses on training staff, guiding guests, and communicating with the local community about environmental issues and conservation. The camp believes that education is crucial in raising awareness and promoting behavior change towards the environment. Staff members are trained on the best environmental protection practices and provided with necessary equipment. Additionally, tourists are educated on responsible tourism practices to minimize their environmental impact while traveling. Blue Diamond also engages with the local community where the camp operates, emphasizing the benefits of environmental protection and conservation. This helps individuals recognize that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a shared responsibility and that the benefits extend to everyone, not just a select few.

      • Blue Diamond Camp collaborates with local authorities, NGOs, and experts to monitor and protect the natural resources and wildlife in the national park. We work closely with the national park management, local communities, and stakeholders to ensure that their tourism activities comply with the regulations and objectives of the national park. Additionally, Blue Diamond Camp partners with non-governmental organizations and experts to conduct research and surveys on caves, plants, and animals within the park. They also provide support to the ranger team of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park to patrol and safeguard the park against illegal activities such as hunting and illegal logging.

Through its net-zero tourism business model, Blue Diamond Camp aims to gradually shift the mindset about tourism and redefine business practices in this industry. The goal is for Blue Diamond Camp to not only attract many visitors, but also become a pioneer in green tourism in Vietnam, promoting sustainable practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
